Meers Restaurant & Wichita Mountains Ride 2-16-09

Today, Monday 2-16-09, was supposed to have been partly cloudy with temps in the mid 60's, so we planned a bike ride to the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma with lunch at the Meers Restaurant located in the mountains. Instead, it was overcast, about 43 degrees with a chance of rain showers. With that threat in the air, several opted out of the ride. However, those that did ride today were: Matt & Jennie, Kenny & Leslie, Jeremy, Clint & me (John). Scroll down and join us on our ride to the Mountains, lunch, the Holy City, up Mt. Scott, around Lake Lawtonka and then home as the sun went behind the clouds and the temp started dropping.. REMEMBER: IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE PICTURE BIGGER, JUST CLICK ON THE PICTURE...

We met at I-44 & Missile Rd in Wichita Falls, Tx at 10:45 a.m. with KSU at 11:00 a.m. Here are Matt & Jennie, and their Harley, as we await the others..

Here are Kenny & Leslie & their Harley..

Here is Clint & his Suzuki (?).. He told us he is getting ready to buy a Ducati...That one he has now runs PDF..

Here is Jeremy & his new Harley. He likes this one alot better than his Nighttrain that he traded in on it..

Clint takes this picture of our group prior to us leaving. Left to right: me, Leslie, Kenny, Jennie, Matt and Jeremy

A great person, Jimmie, stooped by and asked if she could take a picture of all of us. Left to right: Clint, Matt, Jennie, Kenny, Leslie, Jeremy & me.

Jimmie takes two in case one of us blinked... Jeremy, Matt, Jennie, Kenny, Leslie, Jeremy & me.

I asked Jimmie to join the group and get her picture taken with us. She graciously obliged. Left to right: Clint, Matt, Jennie, Kenny, Leslie, Jeremy and Jimmie is in the middle..Thanks Jimmie, we appreciated your kindness..

We head out, Northbound on I-44. Clint is #2, Matt & Jenny #3, Kenny & Leslie #4 and Jeremy is back in the back, #5

We continue Northbound into Oklahoma. Same lineup behind me.

Just South of Geronimo Oklahoma, we stopped to get a picture of the Harley's out front of this building with the big Harley Parking Only sign . Left to right Jeremy's Harley, Jeremy, Kenny's Harley, Leslie & Kenny, Matt, Jennie, Clint, Matt's Harley

Leslie enjoy what little sun we saw today..

Clint's bike & my bike, (Ms Clone) parked a respectful distance away from the HPO sign.

Jeremy crept around to the side of this building..HOLY COW!! It's one of them buildings!!!

After beating a hasty retreat from that building that apparently housed a den of iniquity, we bypassed the I-44 toll gate and and re-entered I-44 a few miles north of the Gate. The Mirror shot shows Matt & Jennie #2, Kenny & Leslie #3, Clint#4 and Jeremy back there behind Kenny at #5.

We approach the Medicine Park Exit 49 with the group still intact

As we head West on Okla 49, Kenny shows me the width of his piece of roadway...

Kenny still showing us the width of his piece of the roadway. Either that or Leslie's got a gun stuck in his ribs...

We get to Meers Restaurant in the Wichita Mts., park the bikes and stand around and talk before going in. For more info on Meers, click this link: http://www.meersstore.com/ That's Clint & Jeremy talking to Matt (back to camera) and Jennie. Kenny, Leslie & I went on in...

Inside, Kenny & Leslie at the table.

Jeremy at the end of the table

We leave Meers and head for the Holy City in the Wichita Mts. Matt & Jennie are leading, Kenny & Leslie are #2, Clint is #3, Jeremy is #4 and I am now #5

Going up & over one of the many hills along the way

The view to our right

Going up yet another hill

We park the bikes in the parking lot of the Holy City in the Wichita Mts. This is where they put on the Easter Pageant every year. The ACLU and anti-any kind of religion types tried to get it shut down a few years ago..Needless to say, it still stands and still has the pageants.

The bikes & the Holy City

If you click the picture, you can see Matt at the staue of Jesus. That statue is made out of the rock at the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, Israel

At the Holy City: Jeremy, Matt, Jennie, Leslie, Kenny & Clint

We leave the Holy City and set our sites on Mt. Scott

Some of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge as we head to Mt. Scott

Mt. Scott in front of us. Up front: Matt & Jenny followed by Kenny & Leslie, Clint, Jeremy and me..

Getting closer

That is the entrance just ahead...Then it's a nice curvy climb to the summit...

And we start up

This was Jeremy's first time up to Mt. Scott

It is usually windy at the top. Being a cool day and windy, there aren't too many folks that go up on motorcycles.. Except for a few crazies from Texas...

As we climb upward, you can see Lake Lawtonka below on the right. I told Jeremy if I messed up and went over the side while taking pics, not to worry about me but to find the camera as I was going to click the shutter all the way down to the sudden stop at the end and those would be some pretty cool pics...(grin)

Up, up, upward they climbed...

We're getting close to the summit

A view to the West which is to our right , at this point

The sun is out for awhile

The last couple upward curves

We made it and here are Kenny & Leslie, Jeremy, Jennie & Matt & Clint at Lookout Point

A challenger approaches Clint as Clint removes his helmet and prepares to knock said challenger to one of the other Mountains.. Tread lightly Jeremy...

Jennie & Matt. Jennie was shivering.....

As we get ready to leave: Kenny, Leslie, Clint, Jennie, Matt and Jeremy

We start back down Mt. Scott

The curves as they look going down

Still heading down Mt. Scott

Nearing the bottom

Last curve to the bottom.

We all made it to the base of Mt. Scott without mishap and started around the curves at Lake Lawtonka..

More of the curves around the Lake

It is one giant zig zag around that Lake.

We finish the run around the Lake and head home. Here is Jeremy

Taking it easy for now...

As we head for our Southerly route home, you can see Clint up ahead, stretching his legs out. He rode like that for a mile or so...

We stop for fuel in Cache Oklahoma. It was here that the sun went behind the clouds to the west and the temp started to drop. This is Jennie & Matt as we get ready to fly low home to beat the cooling temps

The last picture of the ride today as we speed up quite a bit to get back to Texas. From the time I rolled out of the garage this morning to the time I rolled back in this afternoon, showed a trip of 227.6 miles. Not a bad day of riding. I think we all had a good time today even with the cooler temperatures. I know I did. I always have a great time riding with friends and I look forward to our next ride.
